ROOSMARIJN SCHOONEWELLE (Hoorn, 1980) lives and works in Amsterdam. Her work consists of painterly works on paper, collages and paintings. She explores the boundaries between abstraction and figuration. Her work is colorfull and it has a dynamic appearance, the vividness with which the works are made must remain palpable to the viewer. While making she wants to be present in the moment, as in meditation. With controlled nonchalance, playfulness and determined courage she makes her art. As a maker, she is (re)shaping material things, but she also works with emotions. Within her artistic practice she wants to slow down and lean into the subconscious. She is looking for the essence of things and experiences this inner nature of things as an elemental energy; a primal feeling or inner force, such as the urge to live, sadness, care, love and sexuality

Living in a society where there is a lot of attention for success and results, she questions with an open mind what is important in life. What is our relationship with nature and what value can spirituality have for us? She believes that we need to feel, smell and hear more in order to continue to connect with our environment and approach it with care.

Her practice is supported for 12 months (2023-2024) by the AFK (Amsterdam Fund for the Arts). Under the title Softer Better Slower Stronger she is working on a body of work, consisting paintings, collages and tapestries.

Collaborations

Next to her individual practice she forms an art collective with Heleen Wiemer and Richtje Reinsma called Het Harde Potlood. And she works together with Josine Timmer as Timmer & Schoonewelle.
